Family Therapy in West Palm Beach, FL

Is Your Family Stuck In Patterns That Keep Pulling You Apart?

Does it feel like no matter how hard you try, the same arguments keep happening over and over? Are communication breakdowns, unresolved conflicts, or a major life transition creating distance and tension in your family? Is one family member’s struggle affecting everyone else in ways that feel overwhelming and impossible to navigate alone?

Every family faces challenges. Conflict, misunderstanding, and disconnection are a natural part of family life — but when these patterns become entrenched or when a crisis hits, the strain can feel insurmountable. Family therapy offers a structured, supported space where families can come together to address what is not working, rebuild understanding and connection, and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

At Whole Health Psychological Center, our team of licensed family therapists in West Palm Beach works with families of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. We offer in-person sessions at our West Palm Beach office and telehealth sessions for families throughout Florida. We believe that when families heal together, every member benefits.

When Should A Family Consider Therapy?

Family therapy is appropriate for a wide range of situations. Some families come to therapy in the midst of a specific crisis. Others seek support during a major transition. Many simply recognize that their communication patterns are not working and want to make changes before things deteriorate further. Common reasons families seek therapy include:

Communication breakdown where conversations regularly escalate into arguments, family members feel unheard or dismissed, or important topics are avoided entirely.

Parent-child conflict including persistent defiance, power struggles, and difficulty establishing healthy boundaries and authority.

A child or teenager’s mental health struggles where one family member’s anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, or other challenges are affecting the entire family system. We also offer child therapy and teen therapy for individual support.

Divorce and separation including helping children adjust to family restructuring, navigating co-parenting dynamics, and managing the emotional fallout for all family members.

Blended family adjustment where step-parents, step-siblings, and new family configurations create tension, loyalty conflicts, or adjustment difficulties.

Grief and loss when a family has experienced the death of a loved one, a miscarriage, or another significant loss and is struggling to support one another through the grieving process.

Trauma when a traumatic event has affected the family as a whole or when one member’s trauma is impacting family relationships and dynamics.

Major life transitions such as a move, a job loss, a serious illness, or the departure of a child for college — transitions that disrupt established family roles and routines.

Estrangement and reconnection when family relationships have become distant or broken and family members want to work toward reconciliation.

How Family Therapy Works

Family therapy is grounded in the understanding that individuals do not exist in isolation — we are shaped by and embedded in our family systems. The patterns of communication, relating, and responding that develop within families powerfully influence every member’s emotional wellbeing, sense of self, and capacity for healthy relationships.

Family therapy looks at the family as a system — examining the roles, patterns, boundaries, and dynamics that shape how family members relate to one another. Rather than identifying one person as “the problem,” family therapy explores how the system as a whole contributes to and maintains the difficulties being experienced.

Our family therapists draw from a range of evidence-based approaches depending on the family’s specific needs and goals including:

Structural Family Therapy which examines and addresses the organization of the family system — boundaries, hierarchies, and coalitions — helping families develop clearer, healthier structures.

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy which focuses on the emotional bonds between family members, helping them express their needs more effectively and respond to one another with greater empathy and attunement.

Narrative Therapy which helps families examine and rewrite the stories they tell about themselves and their relationships, opening up new possibilities for understanding and connection.

CBT-Based Family Approaches which address the thinking patterns and behavioral cycles within the family that maintain conflict and distress.

Gottman Method Couples and Family Therapy for families where the parent relationship is a central focus, using research-based tools to strengthen communication, trust, and connection. For couples-only work, see our couples therapy and marriage counseling pages.

Who Participates In Family Therapy?

Family therapy is flexible. Who attends sessions depends on the specific concerns being addressed and what configuration will be most therapeutic. In some cases all family members attend together. In others a subset of family members — such as parents only, or a parent and child — may be the focus. Your therapist will discuss the most appropriate structure with you at the outset and adjust it as therapy progresses.

We work with all family configurations including nuclear families, single-parent families, blended and stepfamilies, multigenerational families, adoptive families, and LGBTQ+ families.

Family Therapy in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County

Families in Palm Beach County look like a lot of different things. The family that splits its time between a home up north and a home here, and whose kids have one set of friends for summer and another set for the school year. The multigenerational family where grandparents retired to Florida first and adult children eventually followed — creating a whole new set of boundary questions that were easier when everyone lived in different states. The blended family trying to make step-sibling relationships work while managing two households, two holiday calendars, and sometimes two different state custody arrangements. The family navigating a parent’s sudden illness, a grandparent’s dementia, or the loss of a loved one who held the whole family together.

Our family therapists work with families from throughout West Palm Beach — including Northwood, Flamingo Park, El Cid, Southend, Grandview Heights, and Downtown — as well as from Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Wellington, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach. Hurricane season, the summer slowdown when snowbird relatives have gone home, the emotional intensity of holidays in a place where extended family flies in for a week and then disappears again — these rhythms shape family life here in ways that matter. Whatever your family is navigating, we meet you where you actually live.

What To Expect In Family Therapy

Your First Session

The first session typically involves all participating family members meeting together with the therapist. Your therapist will create a safe, structured environment where everyone has the opportunity to share their perspective. Ground rules for respectful communication are established and the therapist begins to develop an understanding of the family’s dynamics and goals.

Building Your Treatment Plan

After gathering a thorough understanding of the family’s concerns and strengths, your therapist will work with the family to identify goals for therapy and develop a treatment plan. Goals are collaborative — every family member’s perspective is taken into account.

Ongoing Sessions

Sessions are 55 minutes and typically occur weekly, particularly at the beginning of treatment. Your therapist will regularly assess progress and adjust the approach as needed. Some families complete their goals in 8 to 12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support, particularly when the challenges are complex or longstanding.

In-Person and Telehealth Sessions

We offer in-person family therapy sessions at our West Palm Beach office at 1920 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd #211, West Palm Beach, FL 33409. Telehealth sessions are available for families throughout Florida via secure, HIPAA-compliant video — a practical option for families with busy schedules or members in different locations.

Insurance We Accept

We accept most major insurance plans for family therapy, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield / Florida Blue, Cigna / Evernorth, United Health Care, Tricare East, and Medicare Part B.

Common Questions About Family Therapy

What if one family member refuses to participate?

Family therapy can still be helpful even if not every member is willing to participate. Working with the family members who are present can produce meaningful changes in the family system that positively affect everyone — including those who are not in the room. Your therapist can also discuss strategies for encouraging resistant family members to engage over time.

Will the therapist take sides?

No. Family therapists maintain a neutral, balanced stance and work to understand and validate every family member’s perspective. The goal is not to determine who is right or wrong but to help the family as a whole develop more effective ways of understanding and relating to one another.

How is family therapy different from individual therapy?

Individual therapy focuses on one person’s inner experience, history, and goals. Family therapy focuses on the relationships and dynamics between family members. Both can be valuable and they are often complementary — some family members may benefit from individual therapy alongside family sessions.

Can family therapy help with a teenager who is refusing to engage?

Yes. Adolescent resistance is very common in family therapy. Our therapists are skilled at engaging reluctant teenagers and helping them feel heard and respected rather than judged or ganged up on. Often the structure of family therapy — where the teen’s perspective is given equal weight — helps reduce resistance significantly.

Is family therapy appropriate for very young children?

Yes. For families with very young children, parent-child therapy approaches are particularly effective. These involve the parent and child working together with the therapist to strengthen their relationship, improve communication, and address behavioral or developmental concerns in the context of the parent-child bond.

Do you work with families going through divorce?

Yes. We work with families at every stage of the divorce process — helping children adjust to family changes, supporting parents in maintaining effective co-parenting relationships, and providing a space to process the emotional complexity of family restructuring for every member involved.
