Have you spent your life navigating a world that was not always designed with you in mind — and found that your mental health has paid a price for it? Are you carrying the weight of experiences that many people around you cannot fully understand — the exhaustion of coming out, the pain of rejection, the complexity of navigating identity in a world that still has so far to go?
Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety or depression that is rooted in experiences of discrimination, family rejection, or the internalized messages you received about who you are. Maybe you are navigating the coming out process — to your family, your workplace, or yourself — and need a space to do that with support and without judgment. Perhaps you are questioning your sexual orientation or gender identity and want a thoughtful, affirming space to explore those questions. Or perhaps the struggles that brought you to therapy have nothing to do with your identity at all — and you simply want a therapist who will not make your identity an issue when it does not need to be.
Whatever brings you here, you deserve therapy that is genuinely affirming — not just tolerant, not just neutral, but actively knowledgeable about and respectful of your experience as an LGBTQ+ person.
At Whole Health Psychological Center, we provide LGBTQ+ affirming therapy for individuals, couples, and families in West Palm Beach and throughout Florida. We offer in-person sessions at our West Palm Beach office and telehealth sessions for clients throughout Florida. Our therapists are committed to creating a space where every client feels truly seen, respected, and safe.
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy is therapy that actively acknowledges, respects, and supports the full spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities. It operates from the foundational understanding that being LGBTQ+ is a normal and healthy aspect of human diversity — not a disorder, not a problem to be solved, and not something that needs to be changed or prayed away.
Affirming therapy goes beyond simply being non-judgmental. It means that your therapist has specific knowledge about the unique stressors and experiences of LGBTQ+ people, understands the impact of minority stress on mental health, and is able to help you navigate LGBTQ+-specific challenges with genuine competence and care.
It also means that your therapist will not assume that your LGBTQ+ identity is the source of your difficulties — or that it is irrelevant to them. A skilled affirming therapist holds your identity with care while remaining attuned to the full complexity of who you are and what brings you to therapy.
Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ individuals experience significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and suicidality compared to the general population. This is not because being LGBTQ+ is inherently associated with mental health difficulties — it is because of the chronic stress of navigating a world in which LGBTQ+ people continue to face discrimination, stigma, rejection, and violence.
Minority stress theory describes the unique stressors experienced by members of stigmatized minority groups — including external stressors like discrimination and rejection, and internal stressors like internalized homophobia or transphobia, the vigilance of concealing one’s identity, and the constant need to assess whether a given environment is safe.
These stressors are real, they are significant, and they have measurable impacts on mental health. Affirming therapy takes them seriously — helping LGBTQ+ clients understand the external sources of their distress, develop resilience in the face of ongoing stressors, and heal the internalized wounds that minority stress so often creates.
Our affirming therapists work with LGBTQ+ clients on a wide range of concerns including:
Coming out including navigating the coming out process to family, friends, coworkers, and communities.
Family rejection and estrangement including healing the wounds of rejection by parents, siblings, or other family members, and navigating the complicated grief of losing or partially losing family relationships because of your identity.
Identity exploration including support for individuals who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity and want a thoughtful, non-directive space to explore these questions without pressure or agenda.
Gender identity and transition including support for transgender and non-binary individuals at any stage of their gender journey — from early identity exploration through social and medical transition and beyond.
Internalized homophobia and transphobia including healing the deeply internalized shame and self-hatred that can develop as a result of growing up in environments that communicated that being LGBTQ+ was wrong, sinful, or shameful.
Relationship and dating challenges including the unique dynamics of same-sex relationships, navigating dating as an LGBTQ+ person, and addressing relationship difficulties in the context of an affirming therapeutic relationship.
LGBTQ+ couples therapy including support for same-sex couples, queer couples, and couples navigating gender transition — with an affirming therapist who understands the unique dynamics and challenges of LGBTQ+ partnerships.
Religious and spiritual conflict including the painful intersection of LGBTQ+ identity and religious faith — navigating rejection by religious communities, reconciling identity with faith, and finding a spirituality that honors the whole of who you are.
Trauma related to identity including healing from experiences of bullying, harassment, assault, conversion therapy, or other traumatic experiences related to LGBTQ+ identity.
Family therapy for families navigating a member’s coming out or transition — helping families build understanding, improve communication, and strengthen relationships across differences.
General mental health concerns for LGBTQ+ clients who simply want to work with a therapist who is affirming and knowledgeable — regardless of whether their presenting concern is directly related to their identity.
At Whole Health Psychological Center we are committed to providing genuinely affirming care for every LGBTQ+ client who walks through our door. This means:
We will never pathologize your sexual orientation or gender identity. We will use your correct name and pronouns consistently and without hesitation. We will not assume that your LGBTQ+ identity is the source of your difficulties — or ignore it when it is relevant. We will bring specific knowledge about LGBTQ+ experiences and minority stress to our work with you. We will create a space where you can be fully yourself without editing or self-monitoring.
We also recognize that the LGBTQ+ community is not monolithic. The experiences of a gay cisgender man, a bisexual woman, a transgender teenager, a non-binary adult, and a queer person of color are all distinct — shaped by the intersection of identity, culture, family, faith, and a hundred other factors. Our therapists approach every client as an individual.
For many LGBTQ+ clients in Palm Beach County, finding a genuinely affirming therapist has not always been easy. Some of our clients came out decades ago in a very different cultural climate and still carry the wounds of that experience. Some are navigating a family that is technically accepting but whose actual behavior tells a different story. Some moved to South Florida specifically because they wanted to live somewhere more accepting — and then had to figure out what it means to actually build a life here as an out person. Some are at the beginning of figuring out their identity and just want a space where they can think out loud without anyone assuming they know what the answer is.
Our affirming therapists work with clients from throughout West Palm Beach — including Northwood, Flamingo Park, El Cid, Southend, Grandview Heights, and Downtown — as well as from Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Wellington, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach. Wherever you are on your journey, we are here.
Your First Session
Your first session is a chance to get to know each other and for you to get a sense of whether the therapeutic relationship feels safe and affirming. Your therapist will ask about what has brought you to therapy and will take the time to understand your identity, your history, and your goals — without assumptions and without agenda.
Building Your Treatment Plan
Your therapist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that reflects your specific concerns, your identity, and your goals.
Ongoing Sessions
Sessions are 55 minutes and typically occur weekly. We offer in-person sessions at our West Palm Beach office at 1920 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd #211, West Palm Beach, FL 33409, and secure telehealth video sessions for clients throughout Florida — an option that many LGBTQ+ clients particularly appreciate for the privacy and safety it provides.
We accept most major insurance plans for LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield / Florida Blue, Cigna / Evernorth, United Health Care, Tricare East, and Medicare Part B.
Not sure if your plan covers therapy? Call our office at (561) 721-6400 and our team will verify your benefits before your first appointment.
How do I know if a therapist is truly affirming versus just saying they are?
This is an important question. Genuine affirmation goes beyond a rainbow flag on a website. In your first session pay attention to whether your therapist uses your correct name and pronouns without prompting, whether they demonstrate specific knowledge about LGBTQ+ experiences, and whether you feel genuinely seen and respected rather than merely tolerated. It is completely appropriate to ask a prospective therapist directly about their experience working with LGBTQ+ clients and their approach to affirming care.
Do you offer therapy specifically for transgender and non-binary clients?
Yes. Our affirming therapists have experience working with transgender and non-binary clients at all stages of their gender journey.
Is conversion therapy available at your practice?
Absolutely not. Conversion therapy — any attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity — is not only ineffective but deeply harmful. It has been condemned by every major medical and mental health organization. We will never attempt to change, suppress, or pathologize your sexual orientation or gender identity.
My family does not know I am LGBTQ+. Will my therapy be confidential?
Yes. Everything you share in therapy is strictly confidential with very limited exceptions required by law. Your therapist will never disclose your identity or the content of your sessions to your family or anyone else without your explicit consent.
I am not sure if I am LGBTQ+. Can I still come to therapy to explore these questions?
Absolutely. Many people come to therapy precisely because they are in a process of questioning or exploring their identity and want a safe, non-directive space to do so. Your therapist will not push you toward any particular conclusion or identity.
Do you offer therapy for LGBTQ+ teenagers?
Yes. Our therapists provide affirming support for LGBTQ+ teenagers navigating questions of identity, coming out, and family acceptance. See our teen therapy page for more on how we work with adolescents.
You deserve therapy that honors the fullness of who you are — not a version of therapy designed for someone else that you have to adapt yourself to fit. You deserve a therapist who brings genuine knowledge, genuine respect, and genuine care to understanding your experience.
